Podbot

February 16th, 2009

The Podbot is a robot that has onboard podcasting capabilities, hence Podbot. The robot handles similar to a Remote Controlled (RC) car as it can move forward and backwards, and rotate left to right. What makes it different from other RC cars is device you use to actually make it move, in addition to all the on-board podcasting capabilities. The Podbot has eyes and ears too! Allow me to explain.

The webcam is the eyes of the robot. The person controlling the robot can do so using a laptop, desktop, personal digital assistant (PDA), or any other wireless-enabled device that supports the PodBot client software. The client software displays the output from the webcam, which allows the one controlling the robot to see where its going, without actually being physically where the robot is located.

Think of the robot as a podcasting kiosk on wheels. The robot wanders around and when someone wants to create a podcast, they pick up the microphone and begin their podcast. Since the on-board Tablet PC is connected to a wireless network, the podcast is streamed onto the interenet. The podcast can be listened to by anyone visiting the website it is posted on. Its simple and quick, and the microphone is the ears of the robot.

Even though this was just another side project for myself, the Podbot was taken to Gnomedex 5.0 where it received its fame!  The robot profiled by various press and media companies, which you can surf to in the related links section of this page. Most cool of all it even made it onto Robert Scoble’s red couch ;) In case you’re wondering, the picture for this post is of the Podbot sitting on Robert Scoble’s red couch.
